I bought this for my kid. I'm not sure what kind it is, but it looks like a Roadster or Roadster 2, from pictures I've seen. Maybe a Black Widow?
Most, or all of the ones I've seen have Comet Torque Convertors, but this one didn't come with one. The frame has a jackshaft going through it, behind the engine plate, with a 30 tooth #35 sprocket on the clutch side, and 12 tooth #40/41 sprocket on the rear wheel sprocket side. The rear sprocket is a #40/41- 54 tooth. The guy I bought it from gave it to me all apart, and gave me a box of parts which included both drive chains w/ master links, and a 12 tooth #35 centrifugal clutch. Knowing it was a Rupp, I expected a primary drive pulley clutch a secondary, a belt, etc, but all he had was a clutch. I reluctantly bought it anyway, despite the calculated 13.5:1 final drive ratio, using an ordinary centrifugal clutch.
All the other essentials were there, including the rear shocks and hardware, a new throttle/grip set with cable, and one brake lever/cable, with the other one missing. The incomplete, stripped engine also came with it. I'd say itwas a 99% complete rolling chassis, less a good, complete engine, and the rear brake cable/lever.
The small Tecumseh engine (maybe 3, 3.5, or 4 HP?) was a basket case. All stripped down. No shroud or recoil starter, crappy silver paint all over it, the carb and magneto missing, etc. (basically a long block assembly with a flywheel.)
Got it home and cleaned off several layers of different paint. (yellow, red, black and silver) The guy even painted the spokes and the rims with all these paints. I cleaned it up really well, and decided to paint the entire thing a semi-professional appearing gloss black, (including the rims and spokes), and it now looks 100% better.
I was sadly disappointed to find that none of the engines I had on hand at home would fit forward slanted engine mounting plate: A 7hp Techumseh, a 6.5hp Greyhound (Harbor Freight) a 5hp Briggs, or a 5hp Honda GC 160. These will all fit most other "old-school" minibikes, but not this one. So, I guess, now I either need a complete engine, or the parts to complete the one I got with the bike.
Can anyone tell me whether this was originally equipped with a torque convertor, and if I can locate one that will fit as original, without modifications? I would like to get this together with a decent running engine, more powerful than a little 3 or 3.5 horse, and a torque converter drive.
I really like this bike's full suspension, swingarm w/ shocks, front fork suspension, and it's overall rugged appearance and feel. In my opinion, it's a lot better than the Boonie Bike I got him last year. I'd like to fix it up nice, without sinking a fortune into it.
Thanks, in advance for any help, ideas, info or suggestions. Warm Regards, Eric
